EXT. ROAD - DAY DAVEY approaches the man, lying on his side in the middle of the road. He carefully kneels down and inspects the man's dirty face. His eyes and mouth are closed. Davey puts his ear close to the man's mouth and listens for a breath. He hears something and pulls away. DAVEY Hey. The man remains unconscious. Davey lightly shakes him. Still nothing. He rolls the man onto his back, which exposes a missing right arm. Davey recoils, startled and then disgusted. After taking a moment to recover, he reluctantly touches and squeezes the empty arm of the jacket. Davey stands up and surveys the area. No cars in sight. He crosses his arms and stares disturbingly at the victim, apparently stricken with a moral conflict. Davey sighs, takes the man by the feet, and drags him to the side of the road. Wipes his hands on his jeans and heads to his car. As he grabs the driver side door handle, a blaring honk jolts him. Davey looks up to see a car stop about ten yards behind his. CARL steps out and waves as he approaches Davey. Carl stops about even with the bumper of Davey's car. CARL Hey partner. DAVEY Hello. Carl furrows his brow, concerned. CARL Somethin' the matter? DAVEY Uh, yeah, well. I found this guy in the middle of the road. CARL Alive? DAVEY Yeah, musta been hit by a car or something. Carl approaches the man. Davey meets him at the body. They stare down at it together. Carl steps on the empty jacket arm, then eyes Davey with suspicion. CARL What happened to his arm? DAVEY Uh, it was gone when I got here. Carl nods. CARL I see. Awkward silence. CARL (CONT'D) Were you just gonna leave him here? DAVEY No, no. I mean, I was gonna give him a ride to the hospital, but I couldn't get him in the truck by myself. Carl grins. CARL Shit, looks like I was right on time. EXT. ROAD - DAY Davey carries the man by the legs, while Carl supports him under the shoulders, as they carry the man around to the back of the truck. EXT. ROAD - DAY Davey stands in the bed of his truck and pulls the man inside, with help from Carl. EXT. ROAD - DAY Davey hops down and shuts the tailgate. DAVEY That was a chore and a half. CARL You want a water for the road? I got some in the car. DAVEY Sure, thanks. CARL Hold on, I'll go grab one. Carl retreats. Davey directs his attention to the new passenger. The man stirs. Davey's eyes bulge. The man slowly sits up and groans with drowsy pain. Davey watches him closely, anxious and fearful. DAVEY Are you okay? The man drops his jaw, moans, and makes deranged eye contact with Davey, who is frozen with anticipation.
