I’m 20 years old and originally from Brownsville, Texas. Growing up in a predominantly Hispanic community, all I wanted when I was a little kid was a Mexican last name. Although my mother is Hispanic, I took after my fathers anglo side of the family. I didn’t fit in with the rest of the kids in school due to the whiteness of my skin and name. I’m used to being an oddball and I feel like my art expresses a lot of that. Finally when I moved to college, I decided to ‘steal’ my mothers maiden name and make it apart of mine. There! Now everyone knows I’m a Mexican too and I can just shut up about it! So, people here in Austin know me as Sarah Hernandez-Kruger. I don’t know what will become of Marquelle—I guess I could always name a dog after it when I get one. Apart from film, I am also a dance teacher in Georgetown, Texas. I have been dancing for 14 years and I’ve been teaching it for 5. I also really enjoy playing the drums. The inspiration for my films doesn’t come from other films or other film directors, but rather I find my main source of inspiration through music. I am a huge fan of Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan. Growing up I listened to a lot of Pink Floyd starting at the age of six. I don’t know if any of those influences are prevalent in my art. You be the judge.
