Steph Smith's PoMoGoth

[Post-Modern Gothic]

PROJECT 1

I was inspired to make this project upon seeing The Ghost in the Shell and reading the "Cyborg Manifesto" ( Donna Haraway). During our serious discussion of both texts I found my mind wandering and playing a funny scenario of a computer eating a human that took it for granted in my head.

I had never made a Flash animation before, nor did I even really know how to use the program. It was a long trip to making this rudimentary animation that I feel actually ended up being pretty effective. After the fact, I learned that the majority of what I had taught myself while completing this project was a wrong and impractical way to do it. But I did it anyway, and it still makes me giggle. I think that the amateurish quality of the animation works for it, making it feel more innocent; which also at the same time makes the reality of the situation seem all the more frightening. I also thought that the song played along nicely with the pacing of the piece.

It was a struggle to come up with the concept, but I feel it ended well. The concept of cyborgs and the definition of "what is human" is not something you see made fun of everyday in the form of a ridiculous flash animation. This was easily one of my most fulfilling experiences in ACTlab.
