The
Webbed Hand Controversy
|

With an understanding that apoptosis can be manipulated to sculpt a living being, a group has tried to push for an immediate application of this technology. In the development of a human embryo on of the most visible places where programmed cell death takes place is the formation of fingers and toes. If the tissue between digits is not told by surrounding cells to kill themselves they would continue to grow and a child would have webbed hands and feet.
What started as theoretical dialogue between scientists has spilled over into a debate parents across the country are taking part in. The motivations for each side is not has not been officially stated. Rumors surround the preservation of natural design versus technology improving water safety even competive swimming. Though no formal group was available for statements we have photos from a protest and counter-protest last month on the capitol lawn in Washington, D.C.
