BLACKBOX PROJECT 3

"THE EDITOR"

As a film student, one of the first things you learn about is the world of editing. To most people who watch movies, editing is not main concentration during viewing. Good Hollywood editors use techniques that make the film appear as seemless as possible, therefore promoting a feeling of a continuous flow. Good editors strive to make the audience forget they are watching something that was tightly executed and sewn together through many hours of hard work. The best editors are the ones who go un-noticed.

But there is a world out there where editors have to slave for months over hundreds of hours of footage in order to perfectly contrive a piece of film thats duration last only a couple hours. The blackbox of editing is something that few people outside the industry ever care to open up and explore. As the saying goes, "Editing is directing for the second time".

So for my third project, I took on the role as editor for Keith and Cristin's advertising documentary. It was my first attempt at being solely an editor on a project and having no involvement with the actual production. I had to unpack the blackbox of their ideas and sort them into a comprehendible story in order to re-package and box up their film. It was harder than I expected and I gained much more respect for the world of editing.
