My project for postmodern gothic was to try to create a "real" simulacra. This idea poses a veritable difficulty however, given that the term “simulacra” refers to a reality of “signifiers” that have become disassociated from what they had originally been “signifying” under the situation of the linguistic creation of reality. I theorized the creation of a simulacra by trying to craft an object that did not have a concrete linguistic representation that would be able, at the same time, to encompass that very idea. What resulted is know known as the Rubber Band Simulacra! I decided to incorporate layers of words into a rubber band ball. The words pertained to different gothic themes both from my own perspective and the perspective of my classmates. Their incorporation into the rigid structure of the ball represents the inescapability of the linguistic structure of reality.
