These two pictures represent protoypes of my pop-up. After being sucked into reality show one night at home, I became very interested in how our minds are manipulated by the media.
The yellow disc reminiscient of a pac-man chomper (no relation was intended hehe) represents a device a "consumer" can "spin" . Underneath, different products are present (i.e."Dove Cleansing Cloths") The mass is bombarded with products every day and are subconsciously manipulated to believe that they need certain products.
But there is a debate present in the study of media that can be reduced to a simple question: What came first, the chicken or the egg? By this i mean where did the cycle of media begin? As a true reflection of the wants and needs of society or has it created a market that it is now feeding off of?
This was definitely a challenging endeavor. The mechanics of a pop-up book are complex and take great attention. The main idea I wanted to express with the pop-up is the possibility of creating a functional device that is present in all the pages--a device or symbol that exists in the same place and remains attached to the individual with every page turn.
I chose and eye "finger puppet" as a device symbolic of perspective. TThough the ideas displayed upon the pages are somewhat detached, unorganized, or may not follow a linear path, the book still serves as a space of experimentation with textures and movement.
Several ideas are present in the book that i do not elaborate on: social commentary on the permeation of the incessant need for products and the manipulation media partakes on the mass subconscious; the need to feel free through music and dance.
The eye in relation to the ideas serves as a reminder of alternate perspectives, or more plainly reminds us to free our minds from that which controls us.
