Considering the modern negative light in which graffiti exists, it is interesting to note that graffiti has not always been looked down upon as profane. In fact, in the past it was a relatively neutral phenomenon, its only negative association being that it was a popular art of the masses and thus disdained by the higher classes.
The creation of graffiti was not only common, but was fairly accepted and expected.
Only in the last century or so has this connotation changed, and the reasons for this are not entirely clear...
