The point of departure for Sunstein's book concerns the "filtering" capabilities of the Internet, and he specifically cites Negroponte's "Daily Me" from his book Being Digital as a motivation to take up the issue of how democracy is related to information search, information encounters (my own deliberately vague word here - Sunstein might use the word "arguments") and the operations of a public forum. As a discussion of the impact and role of the Internet in a democracy, this book joins many others as a reflection on constitutional and other legal questions related to new technologies. As an examination of a technology, it demonstrates limitations but also highlights some productive points of debate. What are some of the limitations of the way Sunstein considers the Internet in the context of democratic concerns? Are there some missed opportunities in his discourse? at first i thought sustein argument was sound and found it interesting. however, as i continue reading his book i dislike it it and seemed to me kind of limited. i think actually people have been always limited in their choices of information. citizenship and freedom deliberative aspect of democracy :: additional perspectives and opinions. he is mostly evaluating the .com area of the internet. certainly an important one but not the onlyone. >>educational institutions still exist in the internet :: variety of public fora, vairety of general interest intermediaries, he has problems integrating citizenship with consumerism in an era where the two things seem to blend and blur. many people talk about consuming culture and its relationship to identities, politics, etc. problems: -new tech accelerate the spreading of true and false information -people chose alternatives that limit their horizons -lack of unanticipated exposure -evaluation of how new technologies affect us as citizens, not only as consumers -his notion of citizenship does not integrates consumption. very idealistic and platonic about the republic. -people will not form new tastes, will narrow their horizons. -decline in common experiences -system of individualizing filterint Fox and the sour grapes limited options :: "Absence of a demand is likely the product of deprivation" unailavility of information is the reason for the presence of citizens choices narrow freedom and citizenship because it narrows our field of interests and concerns. consumption treadmill moves very fast as a result of the internet :: consumers are more unhappy >> decreasing of well-being beacause other people have more :: set frame for social comparison >> make purchases easier and more convenient choices >> limit freedo >>> people's development of preferences "limit their oen horizons and their capacity for citizenship." 122 system of consumer choices vs system that promotes freedom and democracy system of unlimited individual choices with respect to communications >> against citizenship and self-goverment (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( LECTURE critical legal studies : takes the argument and apply different values to the analysis of property, sort of marxist normative legal studies : never critics/questions the protection of property contitution and first ammendment :: democracy behavioral economics : people act as ecoonomic agents for certain reasons :; economical principles applied to democracy >>> simplistic approach of behavior >> very poor demonstration nostalgia of newspaper, news >>> paradigm of freedom of choice focus in the accident seems week to justify hoe democracy works fragmentation and polarization:; ignore sthe issues of identity, affiliation, anonimity speech rights and protected spaces where people can talk socially asolation privatization of spaces :: individual consumers >> consumption and commerce "solidarity goods" constitutional lawyer >>. stays with constitutional law >> confident zone why he does not include commons, sharing spaces, collaboration?? echo chamber ::: circultattion of the same topic and term among the media
