landScape sketches : The book of lightScape

(c) cara fealy choateThe destination is secondary to the journey. Ideas regarding walls of glass, moving light panels and motion-sensor-triggered led paths unique for each traveler lead to undesired stasis. Temporal notions rise; what is collective temporality?

Walking paths which lead nowhere over and again. Making barriers from leaves which are then scatted by wind and dog. Walking the traces of a memory where the barriers once were. Sketching. Inking. Cutting. Pressing. Cutting. Gluing. Patience.

Cultural transcendence? Labyrinths were used to protect, to confuse, to enlighten, to purify, to track time, to play, to embody wayfinding of human existence. The book of lightScape is a travel guide, a set of prayer beads, a narrative (and other things) of the journey. The journey is the landscape. Texture. Sense. Difference. Digital representation through confusing of the index and referent becomes physical representation. Each instance of representation is cast from the same mold, but each depends on the amount of ink, the path of a spoon, the amount of pressure applied. The mold digitally stays the same with each pressing. But not in the physical world. Does it capture collective memory? Does the index change through time and representation?

Walk the labyrinth.
