Project 2: Dryer

The inspiration for this project came from an episode of Beavis and Butthead where the two miscreants stare at dryer at a washateria while they suck down some slurpies. I too have stared at dryers for extended periods of time, and I find the experience somewhat enjoyable and peculiar in part because the constrained "difference and repetition," (Deleuze and Guattari), distills the essence of spectacle in the most mundane of environments.

I wanted not only to look at the dryer though; I wanted to put my audience inside it ... aurally. I was seeking a sort of hypnotic and ironically minimal affect.

So when my friend Siloen went to do her laundry, I put a small Samsung mp3 recorder in the dryer in various vehicles (pants, socks, and finally naked) and shot the video with a digital camera on a tripod. The other patrons of my neighborhood washateria were quite perplexed.

I used Windows Movie Maker and .wmv embedding because I have a PC and not a Mac. The extreme compression also produced a lot of wonderfully (or horribly) digital artifacts.
