For my second project I teamed up with
the
talented Sarah Kruger. I purchased a tiny microphone from Radio Shack
and brought it with me along with a Mini-Disc recorder on a 4 hour tour
through South Austin on Capital Metro's #7/27 bus routes. The recording
was difficult not only because of the necessity for discretion, but
also because the ambient noise on a bus is extremely loud. When my
final subject boarded the bus, he immediately noticed my professional
headphones and asked how much I had paid for them. I declined to answer
specifically, but emphasized their age so as to make them less
attractive to who might have been a thief. He talked openly and loudly
about his adventures in buying and selling drugs as well as his recent
experience with a familiar Austin Police Department officer. After
extensive filtering to eliminate noise as best I could, I had this
barely audible recording of some fascinating true-to-life dialog. Sarah
and I filmed some footage that would compliment this audio. Below is
