...and drilled out evenly spaced holes on one side of each piece, along the beveled edges, at roughly 45-degree angles.  voila, LED rails!
seam binder?  after what seemed like ages of wandering through home depot, i found something i thought i could work with, in the carpeting section.  figures!  whatever, this is the proof of concept and low budget stage.  the simpler the better!  the binder came in a 36" section.  my skateboard is not 36" long.  i cut it in half...
now don't get me wrong, i love the old trick board, but the gravity's my baby, and i wasn't about to go screwing with my baby if i wasn't sure this would work.  the decision was made.  now what to build the LED rails out of?
LEDs.  they're bright, they're small, and most of all, they're cheap.

i decided they could be used as the visual cue for my project, and hatched a plan: figure out how to put some type of a speedometer and a digital level onto a skateboard, and use the LEDs as incremental indicators -- a bank on each side, one for speed, the other for angle, lit sequentially at regular intervals, e.g. 1 for 5mph, 2 for 10mph, and so on and so on, and same for the other side, perhaps 1 for 7 degrees, 2 for 14... something like that.  my project finally had a concept.  now which board to use...
