I took a broken fiberglass lamp
my father had as a child and fixed the plug and color wheel
that were inside of the lamp. The color wheel was very easy
to make. I simply took a template and used glass paint easily
found at craft stores. I glued it back onto the motor that
still ran and began making a grate like ring to put around
the edges of the lamp. My grandfather helped me sauter the
grate together and I owe him much for showing me how to
measure and form this ring. To have the light give off the
crazy effect I wanted it to, I glued four spirograff wheels
together and placed them on top of the motor. The images
the lamp gave off were mesmerizing.
Since the lamp doesn't give
off a strong light, I had to build my own encasing that
would have the images display on. I built the circular structure
out of galvanized wire and a pillowcase. Unfortunately,
the pillowcase was a little opaque and a paper lamp or vellum
paper would have been much more effective. Otherwise, this
project was extremely fun to do.
