Elaborate disguises are created for the purpose of performance. But we not only utilize masks in a theatrical context, but in the context of our daily lives. Every morning we school our features into a humanoid mask. We smile and say the expected things all the while masking our inner selves. We hide. In order to create a physical representation of this I have created a two-part mask which represents the outer and inner identities. One is bland and human. The other is constricted. It is unable to speak, trapped by the stitching on its mouth. Its eyes bulge as if its very essence is being strangulated. |
