Project 1
Experimentation with canned sound. So seeing as how this was my first project in a class I could barely wrap my head around, I figured it'd be best if I somehow related it to what I'm interested in - filmmaking. I originally set out to understand how music or specific sounds could affect a person and set out to have three people paint whatever they were feeling when I played Bach in the background and then later when playing some sort of death metal. I didn't want to turn it into some major experiment, so I went and talked with Joey who then suggested that I make a video out of it... We got to talking and I walked away from that meeting with an entirely different idea - somehow using canned sounds to create something... Sounds vague and it is, but I got the idea to shoot a video wherein a character would use a gun and it would only "shoot" weird sounds like a "moo" or something random like that, then when he pointed it at himself (a gun no no) it went off and he shot himself in the face...

I shot and cut it with that in mind, but then realized I wanted some sort of a musical influence and asked a DJ friend of mine for a random beat... DJ Steez sent me a random song, knowing only that it would be used in a video. I then spent a day listening to the beat and reflecting on it. It was after listening to this beat over and over and over again that the light bulb went off in my head - the music impacted me and changed my entire concept. I somehow found myself with my original intention - "how does sound/music affect a person" only this time it was me being affected and so my idea of a gun shooting sound effects only changed and how I viewed my very own production swiftly changed and I used my own video as a canvas and changed the style to reflect how that beat made me feel. The shots in the video weren't changed or cut to match a beat or anything, but the look of it sure did and so this video evolved into what it is now in direct relation to how that musical beat changed how I saw my own work.
