Everyday, infants are born who do not fall into the strict categories of "male" or "female." Children born with both male and female genitalia are know as hermaphroditic and intersexed.

Much research has been done in recent decades to determine the complexities of sex and gender, biology and culture. In the 1950's, Money, with the Hampsons, used the Joan/John example to demonstrate the powerful impact of environment on gender. Gender expression comes in an infinite variety of combinations of "masculine" and "feminine" behaviors as shown with the Kinsey Scale, which measures the "percentage" of homosexual desire in a person.
