Hey all,
I was just added to the list today, so I missed the previous
introductions.
So from the seat of my pants here's my little intro.

Jenn Garrison (lived in Austin 10 years - except the 8 months I was in
the Air Force -- that's a good story on gender), RTF Grad Student (1st
semester -- what's with all the Marx I'm having to study?) -- I received
my BA in Sociology from UT in 97 (says so on my diploma!) -- I used to
work at KVRX (91.7fm) here at UT.....did everything from a queer music
show to a local music show (some queers included) -- went on to become
program manager & station manager (helped create/produce the stations
first local music CD). While still in undergrad studies I began working
at 2 commercial radio stations (KROX 101.5 & KGSR 107.1), where I am
still employed (morning show co-host on 101.5, with Sara Trexler - the
only all female morning show in the country & i am audibly 'out' ;
Saturday shift at 107.1).....I also worked for the Austin Music Network
as a host/producer on a weekly music magazine TV show called "Check This
Action" for two years -- That was fun, but I never intended to be in
front of the camera -- I'm a Dj not a supermodel!
I have a love for local music & currently am a scout for Columbia
records on the side.
This experience in the media (along with my duties on the morning show)
created an element of performance within me, very interesting as well,
that showed me the amount of personas one puts on in life.

Now I know this sounds like a resume & well it is, but I have had much
experience in the media & through this experience I have noticed very
interesting dynamics within gender, being a woman in the quasi-public
eye & the effects of pseudo-fame on the very basic level. It fascinates
me......So i applied to grad school, I'm a 'doer' not so much a
'thinker' but want the challenge that lies ahead. My intended focus is
Gender/Sexuality - picked probably because I am a woman & because I date
other women (does that mean I'm a lesbian?). -- That's another topic
for a later date.
So here I am in this class. I am a bit bewildered by the concept of the
web as an alternative space to exist in, I hope to learn more about
this. The issue of gender/sexuality for me has been taken for granted
in the past, I've always just pursued what I wanted to without noticing
the surroundings or limitations around me (possibly a good thing) But
now as I get older, I'm slowing down and am able to reflect on some of
the obstacles I've overcome & some I haven't and the role
gender/sexuality has had in my life and those around me -- With this in
mind I am very interested in children (no...not in that way - that's
illegal), rather the role/influence, 'power' if you will, that the
media plays in children's' lifes particularly in regards to the issue of
gender/ sexuality.

Goodness gracious -- this has become longer than I intended -- I
normally have a 5 sentence email limit -- I've broken a rule and must be
punished!
See you in class.

Jenn Garrison
