Project 2 - Wings of TRANSformation

general info - concept - documentation - extra

:: General Info and Specs ::

I built a pair of extendable wings, with the help of my mechanical engineer friend (don't worry, I did majority of the labor.) As I am pretty big on costuming, I felt that I could use this project to build wings I would eventually need. It turned into a test drive, as it broke onstage from the weight, and yet this project made me grow in an extreme TRANSformation as I learned so many methods and mediums to construct these wings.

:: Idea/concept ::

In general, the idea is on Transformation, as one can attach things, similar to cyborgs, to their body in order to show the image they image themselves to be. I've always loved wings, as they are magnificent structures, and I was planning on working on a set before anyways.
The overall image in the end is the transformation of the two sides of me; one very artsy, symbolized by the feathers, and one very tech-ie, symbolized by the mass of wires that I own. The ability to transform and change one's image to accurately reflect oneself's inner personality is something often sought after.

:: Documentation ::

I began this project in the summer, with my friend Daniel (in the pictures). He drew out the design, and after many shopping trips, thus began the work.
Some methods I used are listed here:
- Cutting wood, metal (metal screw rods), foam
- working with springs, pulleys, magnets, and finally ratchets, in order to work on extending the wings by hand.
- used sewing techniques with spandex and ended with fabric glue on headliner cloth. and Staple gun.
- general sanding, painting, and working with tools (i have my own set now! >D)
I guess I tried gaining strength from this project, but that didn't work. I often tore what I was working on apart and started over again, and thus left a slightly messy job.

:: Extra ::

It broke onstage due to the weak gold/brass hinges snapping, but I'm glad it did, as it gives me an excuse to make even better models.
And a thanks to Virigina and Matt for helping me put on the wings. And Sandy for taking pictures :)
