Project 3:

Exhibit of artwork and other representations which correlate with mental disorders

This was a culmination of my work throughout The Uncanny. I chose to sum up a variety of instances regarding the mind and how it manufactures strange, inexplicable experiences.

I discussed dementia and Alzheimer's and how it is uncanny and sad to be in the presence of a loved one who's mind has gone somewhere else.

I discussed some of Freud's theories regarding the Uncanny, elaborating on some concepts such as privacy, intimacy, and repression, illness as unhomelike/the body as alien or "broken" and "other."

I displayed a shirt with a design that is a striking example of the sudden onset of extreme religious fascination and fixation.

I displayed three paintings of mine as well as some personal items. I discussed how each one related to my understanding of The Uncanny.

I also provided two anecdotes about individuals with mental illness. One anecdote was my own.

I explained my efforts to confront stigma and educate people on the experiences of those diagnosed with a mental illness. I wanted to communicate both the struggles and the potentially good aspects, such as creativity, passion, and attention to detail.
