In mid 1998 Alexander Sturgis from the National Gallery approached David Wooding regarding the Millennium Esso Exhibition 'Telling Time' which was planned for late 2000. This exhibition deals with how artists depict time in their paintings and, as part of this, the National Gallery was interested in how people viewed paintings. Looking at a painting is a process which itself takes time and the Gallery's interest was in how to investigate and demonstrate this process in an informative and educational manner. The idea was to record how people looked at paintings and then make this information available to other Gallery visitors. As experts in recording visual search in applied settings we therefore set about designing and installing the exhibit in room 1 of the Gallery. This web site describes the exhibit and its progress. The site opened on 01.08.00 and will remain open long after the exhibition has finished to detail the ongoing scientific data emanating from this project. The National Gallery description of the exhibition is available online
