I sought to create an image that forced the viewer to look inward and
consider what was truly good or evil about oneself. What we
initially perceive to be evil or bad is based on our programmed notions
of such. I chose an iconic evil, the reaper to represent this
initial assumption. On the other side is the human face, backed by
all our achievements in order and progress. But upon closer
examination the order is taken too far, into war or totalitarian
control. As the eye progresses across the image to the left and
backwards through time into nature, one sees a kind of peacefulness
within. Ironically nature itself has an order, so maybe the point
is that we cannot avoid order no matter where we turn. The reaper
has a tear flowing from his face, indicating that the side I once
perceived to be out of control, or evil, might be the only side of me
that still feels. Too strong of control can lead to suppression of
feeling.
Below are stages of development and source images for the collage.
The hand drawing was done in two stages, first a modified contour
drawing in pencil, then shading was added in ink. The front and
back were modeled off the following photographs. The image of the
reaper was made just for fun by mirroring the skeleton half of my
sketch. I kind of liked the results.
These are some source images used in the collage. I wanted to
create a transition across several eras of architecture and into nature
itself. From left to right the buildings are: Seagram. Chicago,
IL. Glastonbury Cathedral. Glastonbury, England. Petra.
Jordan.
