For the final project I wanted to tell a short story in images. I decided to tell it in graphic novel format, though loosely based on such. The hero of the story is a sociopath who does contract work for the mob. The first panel is a bank robbery that gives the reader some indication as to the moral ineptitude of the hero. He is cold and efficient. Panel two takes us outside this reality, and shows that it is all just a part of someone else's dreams. The dreamer feels guilt for these atrocious acts he sees himself living out in his sleep. Panel three travels back to the hero who is committing some other unforgivable deed for pay. He mentions sleep to draw the reader into the final panel. Panel four shows the hero dreaming that he is a different person who only dreams about the hero's real life. The idea is the sociopath is the one in reality, and the dreamer from panel two is just his conscience. I was thinking a great deal on the subject of dreams and what they
really are. I have heard theories that they are a way for our
minds to have release; to unwind our thoughts and actions from each day.
I began to think about this in relation to a sociopath. Maybe it
isn't that they have no concept of right and wrong, but simply they have
severed the connection to their conscience. Somewhere deep down
part of them still knows, and it comes out in their dreams. Maybe
sociopaths can only dream of feeling guilty. They dream of being
someone else who is appalled by such actions, and these dreams give the
mind rest for the horrendous things they may act upon.
