The
Evil Eye is a superstition found among Mediterranean cultures and other
societies, such as the Indian. While details vary, the basic concept
can be summarized as follows:
A person can transmit negative energy to another via the eyes. This
can happen by a simple remark of how good someone looks, or feelings
of jealously over someone's good fortune. In Greece, not only is the
Evil Eye part of everyday interaction, but is also recognized by the
Greek Christian Orthodox Church (about 90% of Greeks are Christian Orthodox).
As
far as everyday interaction is concerned, there are two situations that
occur most often. To start with, when someone looks good, you don't
even have to tell them that! A simple "Ftou ftou ftou so that I
won't give you the Evil Eye" immediately reveals that you think
that person looks particularly good that day.
Another
frequent occurrence is when you have headache. One of the most apparent
explanations for it would be that you have the Evil Eye.
A simple
spell, using things found commonly in the Greek kitchen, will immediately
show if the suspicion of Evil Eye is correct (most often it is), and
will take the Eye away, and with it, the headache will vanish!
