Project 3
Dream Interpretation

This project came into fruition for a multitude of reasons. To start with I've always really wanted to do one of those video projects where you use a lot of still images and string them together. Also, I've been having dreams about returning some camera equipment to my office. So all of this leads to a strange night when I feel asleep at 9 p.m. I woke up at 3 a.m. completely rested, and decided there was no better time to return the lens and flash. I was with a friend of mine who I also dreamed about returning her equipment, so we both took off to go secretly return them to the office eithout anyone knowing (just like in the dream I had). Just before we were about to leave, I made the connection between my dreams and upcoming actions, and decided to document it. So thus, a reinterpretation of a dream that I had...that actually happened...man this is getting confusing....just watch the video already.

Here's the process (or rather, my semi-flawed process), if you don't already know. First I took all of the images, which ended up being about 750-800 or so. Then I strung as many of them together as I could in Final Cut Express, but there we had a problem. I guess there was a memory limit in Final Cut Express, but I could only put in about 50-60 photos at a time, which when you're stringing photos together really quickly, sucks because you only get to work on the project about 10 seconds at a time. The way I got over this was by making tons of little clips, eventually splicing them all together. The entire project was put to Telefon Tel Aviv, because it's easy to match still images to glitch music. Also, weird light and soft frames, along with the blank screen blanks were all used to add more of a dream-like feel to it. My goal was to simply make this a vignette, a small story that's just a piece of the larger (which I hoped emphasized the "dreaminess" of it all). Finally it was really fun to include myself in all of it, by putting myself in reflections, windows, etc.

Horrah, never done anything like this before. This project, and class made me go a little bit out of the still photograph box. It was fun...glad I did it.
