Dream and Delirium
Home Project 1 Project 2 Project 3For my final project in Dream and Delirium I wanted to do an art project
that related to what we had been learning about in class about books and
dreams. We had learnt that only one side of your brain is in use during
dreams and because of this it makes it impossible to read script while
you are dreaming. I wanted to make an art project that symbolized this
so I ventured out first to find a book with no cover art. I found a
journal at half price books that suited what I was looking for and
purchased it. The texture of the cover reminded me of the Necromonicon
book of the dead from the Evil Dead movies and inspired me to try and
make the cover of the book look similar to that. I started working on
the book by gluing all the pages together with glue stick so that only
two remained when you opened it. These would be the two pages I left
available to create with. After purchasing some air dry clay, to my best
ability I molded on a face to the cover that looked somewhat similar the
face on the Necromonicon from the movie. After I was happy with how the
face looked I stopped and let it air dry. I used a blow dryer to help
speed up the process but still waited a full day until I started working
on it again. Next, I painted the outside cover brown and waited for it to
dry. After drying I painted the eyes black, and I dabbed the rest of the
cover with a little bit of white and yellow brown to give the cover a
finish and add more texture to the piece. After I dried one last time I
put together a jumble of letters using Microsoft word and glued the two
pages to the two pages of the book that I had left open. I then lit the
edges of the paper on fire to give the book a very aged, ancient look. I
did this for a long time until I felt the book looked for mangled and old.
I then took cigarette ash from the ashtray and spread it on the book to make
it look even more aged and ancient. This led up to what is now the final
project. I was pretty happy with the results and am surprised that I was
able to make it look very similar to what I had in my imagination. This
makes me confident in striving to pursue further art projects in the future.
