reclaimed EMERGENCE: the unit cell my initial ambition for this project was to transform cardboard scraps [potential garbage that i had been collecting from trash cans around school] into an object of more significance. because these scraps were of various shapes and sizes, i felt that the easiest way to work with them would be to come up with a standardized unit that i could repeatedly cut out of the scraps. having easy access to a highly efficient and incredibly precise laser cutter, i was able to design a small, intricate unit that i could produce hundreds of within a few hours. after mass producing this modular unit, i began my attempt to extract something functional out of its emergent properties.
the unit: the unit is 1" x 3" and the slots are the exact width of the cardboard used so that the pieces could be friction-fit together [avoiding the use of glue].
mass-production: this documents the laser-cutting process. out of this large scrap [yes, this piece was thrown away just because it was a little bit dirty. shame, huh?], i was able to cut 90 units in about 10 minutes.
results: the unit's emergent structure made it possible for me to create a small table.
and it looks just marvelous in my apartment!
