Uncanny Projects by Lauren Pruitt
For my third and final project of this ActLab series, my classmate and dear friend Brett and I collabarted our ideas and came up with a brain orgy of debauchery. Here's an explanation:
Over this past semester Brett and I learned to spin fire poi together, played ouija board for the first time, and had intense personal experiences that we wanted to illustrate with our collaboration. The uncanniness of this is the fact that our experiences can all relate to ancient ritual practices in one way or another. Brett and I explored the realm of the uncanny by going into age old ritual practices and experiencing first hand how they've infiltrated through generation into our modern subculture and these were all firsts for the both of us.
This semester was an intense personal growth prcess and being a part of ActLab has certainly contributed to the experience. Learning to spin poi was not easy and neither was messing with a ouija board. My mom always told me to avoid those things and now I kind of understand why.
For our presenation, a door that Brett and I painted with our hands was the centerpiece on the floor of the Communications College courtyard. This symbolized our simultaneous intense personal experience that inspired us to paint a door. On top of the door was a ouija board and we were spinning fire around the setup. Here's some photos:
This third project was the most fun I've ever had with presenting in the Act Lab. We may have creeped some people out with the ouija board but that's what I was going for anyways. Brett and I have been spinning fire for about a month and a half now and we still practice are going continue on with the fun. Brett's door is also now safely returned back to his room but still unhinged to the frame.
We were glad to share with the class what interestingly miniscule, different things we did for the first time this semester that helped up learn things about ourselves and one another. The debauchery will not end!
