STS331 Rhetoric of Cyberspace
Interpretation

Gender, what is that???

However, I do not find this true with gender. Gender does not exist in slashdot, I believe this is mainly due to the fact that most geeks are male. One of the key things about geeks is that they are enthusiasts of technology. Most new digital technology is made by, for and consumed by males. This leaves very little room for the feminine voice.

So why is there no gender, if I say males exist in slashdot? Well in a foucaudian sense the powers at bay leave feminism to the fishes, cast aside, to not exist… Not be known and not be thought about. If a female does participate within slashdot, her feminism is often left at the door for reasons I have yet to determine. However, there are exceptions, I just haven’t found them yet in the slashdot archives, but they must exists, shouldn’t they???

Gender is one thing that mass media would prefer to be polarized; for the sake of control and suppression, the act of creating an “other” to be dominated, slashdot does not stand in the way of this force. By not offering a true voice for the feminist Slashdot holds true with the rest of the scientific world by re enforcing women’s place with the scientific community as helpers not leaders. Although I wish I had some redeeming point to make about this topic, I feel that slashdot has a long way to go with gender equality.
