This short, multi-media performance explores Italian-American identity and seeks to unsettle the iconic masculine roles depicted in The Godfather films. In particular, I am interested in the ways the Corleone family legacy is transmitted from father to sons, and how my own family legacy has been uneasily handed down from father to daughters. Among other questions, my performance asks: What are women’s roles in the Italian-American family structure? What do daughters inherit from their fathers? How might a young woman’s identification with strong male role models affect her sense of self? What is the risk in conforming to family tradition? To breaking with it? Where do I locate my own sense of self as an Italian-American woman and a feminist?
