Airbrushed Clothing
For my first project in Disruptive Technologies, I decided to experiment with Airbrush Art. What I did here was contact a local airbrush artist, named Amy Young, and asked her to help me with this project. Since she was looking to do a new art piece for her portfolio, I was lucky enough to receive her help for free. We met up on a Friday afternoon and began. What she did was airbrush my nude body with an art design to make it look as if I was in fact wearing something. The only articles of clothing were my shoes and a tiny red skirt.
How this art form works is that a small air-operated tool sprays a fine mist of alcohol-based paint through a process called atomization. This spray gun is hooked to an air compressor as well as a small vile of the desired paint. The design can be assisted with stencils, but is mostly done by hand.
After Amy completed the design on my body (which took over 3 hours), I had her friend who is a photographer, Andrew Shaw, take pictures for both our purposes (which took an additional 2 hours). Once the photo shoot was completed, I had Mr. Shaw accompany me out in public to fully document how disruptive this could be in society. I noted that most people were extremely interested in my display, asking questions such as what is was, where they could have it done, and what it was made out of. But of course I did have many disgusted and disapproving stares, which should be suspected since I was in fact naked. I felt that due to these people, both interested and offended alike, that this technology was in fact disruptive. Thus, I was ready to present it to my class in presentation form.
In order for me to make this presentation, I had to first Photoshop most of the photos. In the ActLab, I used the necessary applications to crop, resize, and enhance the photos I chose from the collection given to me by Amy. Once that was finished, I downloaded pictures of Amy's work from her site for visual reference for the audience, as well as upload images of her equipment I took with my camera during our session. Once I had all the photos I deemed appropriate, I placed them in Windows Movie Maker. I timed them with my voice over, explaining fully how I went about my project.
