In the fall of 1997, Dr. Sebastian J. Blackheart began work on a machine that would allow passengers to travel back and forth between time dimensions. The idea was developed between Blackheart and then mentor Kip Thorne (Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy, 1994) while Blackheart was obtaining his PhD at California Institute of Technology in the spring of 1989. Beginning in the early 1990's, Blackheart began sketching ideas for a machine that would incorporate an anti-gravitational pull. This would eliminate the problems of holding a wormhole open long enough for a passenger to safely travel through it.

By September 1998, Blackheart had discovered the behavior of the device to be inconsistent. On numerous attempts of wormhole exploration the machine failed to capture the gravitational pull and transform it into the necessary push needed to successfully travel through. With the help of Dr. Daniel Nasatir and Dr. Kip Thorne, Blackheart discovered the machine's flaws lied in the development of the metal guards. They were not sufficiently strong enough to guard the machine against the gravitational pull of the wormhole. Two test machines were destroyed in this process.

Blackheart moved his research team to Central Texas in the fall of 1999 to begin work on what has now been named, Young Heart Attack.
