This
project came about from a thought process that needs
explanation. That explanation is below.
Art
has always been a disruptive technology. Art has always
been a way in which humans expressed ideas and thoughts
that sometimes caused a revolution or changed views
in a non-confrontational way. Art has been a disruptive
technology also for the natural materials that are used
to create it. I took the idea of Art being a disruptive
technology and decided to create one ofthe most basic
and primitive forms of Art that probably brought on
a lot of thought in primitive societies.
For
an ordinary piece of wood or a tree, it's not seen as
something that create something beautiful. By sculpting
the form of wood into something else, the wood takes
on an entirely different life and form. It's disruptive
in the sense of one form is molded into another form
for a different function.
I
sculpted a simple 2x4 into a "totem pole".
I was going for the full 3D effect, but unfortunately
my skills are not that advanced. I ended up making a
one sided totem pole. I made 4 continuous elephant heads
down the piece of wood. To make it look a bit older,
I decided to stain it in cherrywood stain.
It
took about 2 weeks to completely finish, but I wanted
to do so much more with it considering the detail that
could have been burned into the wood. But, I left it
simplistic to have the effect of being basic.
